A Bit About Us

It started as a simple request from a friend…

The first stained glass lacrosse sticks I made for a good friend, Justin Shay (Notre Dame ’85) for his standout, lacrosse playing daughters. The Shays loved them.

Around the time I was finishing up those sticks, a post appeared in the Lacrosse History: Past, Present and Future Facebook page that Erica Wooley administers so well.  As soon as I saw the picture, I recognized the Alf Jacques mark on the stick and said “I have to have that!”

The Wooden Stick

Around the time I was finishing up those sticks, a post appeared in the Lacrosse History: Past, Present and Future Facebook page that Erica Wooley administers so well.  As soon as I saw the picture I recognized the Alf Jacques mark on the stick and said “I have to have that!”

Through the power of the Creator’s Game, I was able to work out a deal with Lisa that involved a piece of stained glass. I also found out that she lives close to the stick’s maker, and he agreed to rebuild the stick for me! I was thrilled with the before and after, he strung it up as a player’s stick, not a museum piece.

Another gift

I was very grateful for the opportunity to have my stick restored my the original maker, and to get his signature on it! I asked Alf if he would like one of the stained glass pieces in thanks for his work.
He said “Sure! But you have to sign it” with a smile.   I incorporated his initials, his mark and the Iriqouis Nationals logo onto the beveled medallions and sent the piece off to Alf.

And so, the Spirit in the Sticks Began

The entire saga of the pursuit of the Alf stick and all that transpired as a result caused Jason Pratt to create a Facebook group called the Traditional Wooden Stick Forum. It has grown to almost 1,400 members in less than a year, and has introduced many people to the history of lacrosse sticks and some of the new makers and restorers such as Curtis Davies in Burlington, Ontario.

Curtis asked me if I could make sticks with the Medicine Wheel.  I was unfamiliar with it, and it led to another opportunity to learn more about Indigenous culture and the sacred symbol of the wheel.
The result was very striking, and many people had expressed interest in having one, and The Spirit In The Sticks was born.

Neil Duffy

One of the inspirations for my Stick project was the book The Spirit in the Stick by Neil Duffy. I had the privilege of meeting Neil at a U.S. Lacrosse event where he was the featured speaker.  Read more….
